REPORT
Date: 17th September 2005
Location: Black Mausoleum, Covenanters Prison, Edinburgh
Whilst this technically wasn't an investigation, it deserves a mention on this
site. Following on from our visit to the Station Hotel in Dudley, the group
set off for Edinburgh in order to take part in the regular City of the Dead
tour. This tour takes in parts of old Edinburgh and culminates in a visit to
Greyfriars Cemetary (yes, the one with the faithful doggy that everyone loves....).
Our guide for the evening was the enigmatic and highly entertaining David Lesault
who regaled us with stories of Scotlands' gory past, taking great delight in
the more gross torture methods used by the Scots!
Whilst we can't go into any great detail about the tour as we don't want to
spoil it for anyone who decides to embark on it, the highlight of the evening
was the last stop.......the Black Mausoleum, home to the legendary Mackenzie
Poltergeist. Although this poltergeist seems to be a recent phenomenon, it nevertheless
has gathered in force. So much so that the gates to the Covenanters Prison are
kept locked and only opened by the tour guides for the protection of the public!
There is a theory that poltergeists are the result of pheremone released during
periods of heightened fear.
The Mackenzie Poltergeist has allegedly been responsible for many physical attacks,
including, scratches, bruises, bite marks and in extreme cases unconsciousness!
David himself claims to have been attacked twice, since becoming a tour guide.
Curiously, towards the end of our tour, Paula felt a sharp scratch to her left
elbow, likening it to the feeling of a pin scraping her skin, beneath two layers
of clothing. On arrival at the gift shop in the cemetary, she and the rest of
the group examined it, but could find no physical mark or cause for the sensation.
However the following morning after arriving home, a bruise had appeared, accompanied
by a reddened area just underneath it. How this came about she doesn't know,
however she maintains that at no point during the drive back to Wales did she
knock her elbow. Check out the gallery for the photographs of this, other evidence
can be seen at www.thepoltergeist.com.
Last but by no means least, as the tour dispersed, David invited us to have
a look around the prison as a group. During this time we discovered that David
is no ordinary tour guide, he also is a thought reader and part of the Spirit
Theatre Company (in his words "it beats working in an office"!).
Whilst we did take some shots, there appears to be nothing out of the ordinary
in the photos, although we are still awaiting the development of a few. It is
certainly one of the most eery and foreboding places that the group have been
to and one that we hope to go back to very soon.
The group would like to say a very big thank you to David Lesault for his kind
offer and we all agree it was the highlight of a very busy and tiring weekend!!
